Apple chances to Fend Off Google
When the iPhone was introduced years ago Google enjoyed the ride in the posterior tsunami it created, big wave that shaped how smartphones in general should be made, but the joy ended up with Apple dropping Google’s Voice and threatened to remove other applications, something that forced Google to create its own mMobile OS and later its Nexus One mobile phone to safe a place for its mobile search business, a business that is almost dominated by the iPhone completely.
Now Apple has realized the money trashed-left on the iPhone and will pursue a better and bigger stake into this lucrative market, even if this mean displacing Google from the iPhone completely, for this new endeavour, Apple is calibrating its guns, buying Placebase (a mobile map developer that can be used to remove Google Map), Quattro Wireless (a mobile ad platform that will be used to provide advertising for free and non-free applications on the iPhone, iPod Touch and now the iPad).
But for Apple to stop Google power on the iPhone and other mobile segment that both companies may collide, it will be necessary to make drastic measures, like entering the search market or outsourcing it to the bigger bidder (yahoo, bing) or even buying Ask.com, which valuation could be around $5 billion, doing so could means more green and fresh.
Here is what I believe are Apple chances to fend off Google (my speculation):
1. Mobile Search Engine or Google on Spotlight
This segment has proved to be a market that Google is trying to keep its control, but if Apple mix information from Ask.com or Yahoo.com with its Placebase Maps, it could mean a real loss for Google, being absent from the recently introduced iPad and from the iPhone alone could make them (Google) rethink its mobile strategy. Of course, it won’t be an easy task, but with Apple resources it can be more than achievable.
2. Placebase
Apple silently bought Placebase and moved its developers to Apple facilities to help shape the new Map application that if combined with Location-based information, Books and Music from iTunes, plus real time information about parking, movie and concert tickets and Weather, could not only provide green cash to Apple, but a real and hard competition to Google Maps.
3.Lala or Clouded iTunes
Music is what made the iPod so popular and recent music related service from Google was tarnished in less than a week when Apple bought Lala, one of the partners on the Google Music. This could only means a cloud version of iTunes that will let everybody to stream music from the web instead of from iTunes, a direct competition to Google Music. But what is really more interesting is iTunes users buying potentials, with millions of active buyers Apple can just create a iTunes-Related Social Network that just will rate, share, recommend or buy music and applications for their iPhones or iPods, but millions of books, newspapers and magazines, a service that will puts Google out of the equation.
While I know how big is Google, it’s wise to notice that Apple is who shape and mandate what is trend or not on the market and that Google is just a follower by now, when they created things that outpace the Apple charisma and dedication to its products, then by that time I will take my hat off, but there is nothing new in the Googledom right now.
